Activating Trails in the Canary Islands.

Activating trails
in Canary Islands

The European ERDF project «Activation Plan for the Regional Footpath Network» has allowed us to identify and characterise risks on footpaths in the Canary Islands.

With the ERDF project «Plan de Activación de la Red Regional de Senderos» we have identified and characterised the Risks in the Canarian Footpaths.

Institutions for responsible walking

Accompanying the team of technicians to reach the finish line together.

Using ICTs to build consensus and improve governance.

With homogeneous risk parameterisation.

Collaborating to lead a unified methodology.

A co-created project.

We have worked together with various institutions to reach a consensus on a methodology that identifies and characterises the footpaths that you can discover or visit in the Canary Islands.

9 institutions of the islands, united by the objective of a consensual methodology of Risks in Canary Islands trails.

Internal trail risks

On the path you walk.

FALLS ON SAME LEVEL SURFACES
Because of the surface or its cover: loose terrain, stones, pine needles, or because of gentle slopes or climatic factors you can fall to the ground, pay attention to the path.

FALLS ON DIFERENT LEVEL SURFACES
On paths with steep slopes or steep terrain, you can suffer a fall from height. Avoid reckless behaviour.

STRUCK BY OR AGAINST OBJECTS
On trails where there are protruding elements or objects that may fall, you should increase your attention.

GETTING HIT BY VEHICLES
On trails that cross or share a section with roads or tracks used by vehicles, you should increase your attention to avoid accidents.

GETTING HIT BY BICYCLES
On sections where you may come across enduro or cross country cyclists, increase your attention.

ACROPHOBIA
On trails with high elevations, especially if they have scenic effects, avoid these sections if you suffer from vertigo.

External trail risks

In the vicinity of the footpath.

MASS MOVEMENTS
Due to the characteristics of the terrain or the materials, there are sections of paths where landslides may occur. You must be more attentive.

Watch the video
ELECTRIC INFRASTRUCTURES
If there are infrastructures or elements of information, transport or electricity distribution near the path, do not approach it, be cautious and never leave the path.

Watch the video
HYDRAULIC INFRASTRUCTURES
If there are ponds, reservoirs, canals, wells, galleries or other construction elements related to hydraulic engineering near the trail, be careful! Never leave the path.
